The Education Sector in the Palestinian NGOs Network (PNGO) in the Gaza Strip and the Education Coalition warned of the US and Israeli policies and smear campaigns that are gravely undermining UNRWA’s mandate to Palestinian refugees by cutting off funds to UNRWA, which would force the latter to reduce and gradually cut its basic humanitarian services to Palestinian refugees in the Palestinian Refugee Camps. Such policies are considered as an attempt to liquidate the Palestinian political and civil rights, which are guaranteed and protected under international law and UN resolutions.
This came up during a meeting between members of PNGO Education Sector, and the coordinator of the Education Coalition in Palestine Refaat Sabbah at PNGO office in Gaza.
PNGO Education Sector and the Education Coalition warned of the ”serious consequences” of the campaigns against the Right to Education as an inherent human right for Palestinian children. About 525,000 students in 700 UNRWA schools in Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip are threatened with being dropped out of schools and their future is at risk. The campaigns will also affect the ability of Palestinian refugee children and youth to access a high quality basic education that would enable them to acquire the appropriate knowledge and skills to become contributing citizens to the development of their communities and the global community. They emphasized that the reduction of US aid to UNRWA is a policy that provides a cover for the attempts that violate the right of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes as stipulated by UN General Assembly Resolution 194.
PNGO Education Sector and the Education Coalition called upon the international community to provide the necessary financing to UNRWA to ensure that it is able to fulfill its role in providing essential humanitarian services to Palestine refugees. The two sides applauded the efforts exerted by UNRWA Commissioner-General Pierre Krähenbühl to mobilize support to protect rights and dignity of Palestinian refugees by launching a global fundraising campaign named #DignityIsPriceless through which UNRWA aims to attract new donors to Palestinian refugees.
